The Girlhood of Shakespeare's Heroines, by Mary Cowden Clarke

             Dana Estes, 1904

This volume is one of a series of five volumes by Clarke on this theme. See below for an image of the spines of the set.  My thanks to Laurel Bliss, Fine Arts Librarian at San Diego State University for this wonderful image--this may be the only library with a complete set of these titles in the original Sacker covers. You can see the different characters portrayed in each of the volumes.  Although most sources list the date of these volumes as 1891, they were actually issued in 1904, according to the American Catalogue. Sacker could not have designed this cover at the earlier date, in any case. An earlier cover design, circa 1887, is also seen below (it also appeared in green).
